Ohio sports betting market

Ohio has become one of the newest states to adopt sports betting legally in its betting industry. The Ohio lawmakers legalized retail and mobile sportsbooks, and the bill was signed into law by the governor, Mike DeWine, in 2021.

The new law is expected to take effect from January 1, 2023, an announcement that the Ohio Casino Control Commission made on their timeline on August 3.

The work of establishing a regulatory framework is currently underway, with the Ohio sports betting industry believed to reach more than $1 billion annually. Sports teams, casinos, and racinos will be the first to get a priority for sports betting licenses, with each initially getting one, but with a chance of acquiring another if they prove their financial viability and benefit to the Ohio State.

When the process is finalized, Ohio will join its neighboring states, some of which have also legalized sports betting and play a vital role in the betting industry in America. They include Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Indiana.

The Ohio sports betting Law HB 29, however, advocates for the conversion of lottery kiosks to limit sports betting activities at bars, restaurants, and grocery stores.

Some of the biggest bookmakers have already secured legal access to the market or are in the process of doing so.
