Biggest Names Who Might Get Cut In The 2022 NFL Roster
The preseason is a very interesting period for all football fans, but it also means that the NFL roaster cuts need to be made. Each team is allowed to have 90 players at the moment, but over the next few weeks, they will have to cut down the roaster to 53 names.
So, as you would expect, some tough decisions will be made here. Very often, the final few spots will come down to who coaches think will contribute the most and who will cost less against the salary cap.
This is a very unpredictable process, just as is the entire NFL season, and that is why sports betting Canada seems to be on the rise. Bettors look to try their luck in guessing the winners, best teams, etc. so now is the right time to join the betting party and see whether you have the sense for predictions.
So, let’s take a closer look at who we think might get cut in the final NFL roster for 2022 on August 30.
Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, San Francisco 49ers
Ever since the San Francisco 49ers traded up for Trey Lance in 2021, people felt like Jimmy Garoppolo can be traded as well. Right now, the trade market has seen Carson Wentz Matt Ryan Russel Wilson and Deshaun Watson, who has been in the spotlight for the wrong reasons recently, traded.
Garoppolo had shoulder surgery earlier in the month, so it is difficult to see someone trading a quarterback with his compensation package after that. So, it is entirely possible that the 49ers release him and save around $25 million.
Myles Gaskin, RB, Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins have several problems on their hands, as it was recently announced that Trill Williams has torn his ACL and is out for the season. Another problem is the roster they need to think of until the 30 August deadline.
Myles Gaskin was the leading rusher of the team last season, but now he is in for a fight for his roster spot. The Miami Dolphins bolstered their running back team in the offseason, as they brought Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert and Sony Michael.
This means that Gaskin has to improve, otherwise, the Dolphins may look to save $2.5 million and release him before the season.
Josh Gordon, WR, Kansas City Chiefs
The main priority of the Kansas City Chiefs remains to figure out the pecking order of their new receiving corps. Travis Kelce is the top target, but there are not many receivers after that. However, there is not a lack of competition either, as the Chiefs managed to sign JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling as free agents.
Moreover, they retained Mecole Hardman and drafted Skyy Moore, so these guys are likely to make the roster. Gordon’s spot is not guaranteed, however. Head Coach Andy Reid recently in an interview said that he likes the progress Gordon made, but stopped short when discussing his chances of making the roster.
Denzel Mims, WR, New York Jets
Denze Mims became an instant hit during the 2020 predraft process, as he made a name for himself as a speed prospect with a classic size. He was later drafted as the No. 59 overall pick by the New York Jets, but he has only made 31 catches for 490 yards and no touchdowns in 20 games in the past couple of seasons.
Mims himself thinks that he should be a starter, but it seems inevitable that he and the Jets might be better off parting ways.
Taylor Rapp, S, Los Angeles Rams
Taylor Rapp was a starter in all 17 regular-season games for the Rams last season, so many would be surprised to see him get the cut. However, he missed the playoff run before the Super Bowl due to a concussion and the team looked just fine without him.
His replacement was Nick Scott and he had a vital role in the Rams’ Super Bowl victory. It is clear that Rapp provides value in the run game, but many wonder whether that is enough to keep him in the team. If the Rams do decide to cut him, they will create more than $2.5 million in additional cap room, which can be very helpful for them.
