Just last month, Laura Dern kept hopes alive for Big Little Lies season 3 by telling Entertainment Tonight, “I mean we wouldn’t all love anything anymore, we’re like family just very happy. I say let’s hope. Let’s keep asking, maybe it’ll come true.” Cast member Zoë Kravitz didn’t keep such hope alive during a new video interview with GQ Magazine. Kravitz announced that “Big Little Lies” is over following the death of director and executive producer Jean-Marc Vallée.
“I don’t think so,” Kravitz said when answering a fan question about the chances of Big Little Lies returning for Season 3. “We’ve talked a lot about doing a Season 3. Unfortunately our incredible director Jean-Marc Vallée passed away last year. It’s heartbreaking. I can’t imagine going on without him. He really was the visionary for this show. Unfortunately it’s over.”
Vallée, the Quebec-born director whose filmography also includes ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ and ‘Wild’ (starring fellow ‘Big Little Lies’ actors Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern), died in December 2021 after becoming a… suffered a heart attack at his cabin outside of Quebec City, Canada. The filmmaker was only 58 years old at the time. Vallée directed all seven episodes of the original Big Little Lies and remained creatively involved after Andrea Arnold took over directing the show’s second season.
Vallée received an Emmy for Directing a Limited Series, Movie or Special for his work on the first season of Big Little Lies. Between the two seasons of Big Little Lies, Vallée stayed with HBO to direct the limited series Sharp Objects, starring Amy Adams.
“Jean-Marc Vallée was a brilliant, extremely dedicated filmmaker, a truly phenomenal talent who infused every scene with a deeply visceral, emotional truth,” HBO said in a statement following the director’s death. “Also, he was an extremely caring man who invested his whole self alongside every actor he directed.”
Many of the ‘Big Little Lies’ cast members took to social media to pay tribute to Vallée after his death, and Laura Dern wrote: “The world has lost one of our greatest and purest artists and dreamers. And we lost our beloved friend. Our hearts are broken.”
“It’s hard to imagine that someone as vital, energetic and present as Jean-Marc is gone. I’m devastated,” added Nicole Kidman. “He was at the center of my creative universe and I can’t overstate his importance to me.
The first two seasons of Big Little Lies are streaming now on HBO Max.
