Zdeno Chara was drafted 56th overall in the third round by the New York Islanders in the 1996 NHL Draft. He was featured by the team as a defenseman for four seasons before being traded to the Ottawa Senators during the 2001 NHL draft. The following year he had career-high goals (10) and points (23), and again in 2002-03 he recorded 30 assists and 39 points overall. He won his first NHL All-Star Game.
