Ferrari has been a bit hot and cold in the first half of the 2022 F1 season and former team engineer Enrique Scalabroni wants his former employers to choose the number 1 driver between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.
Scalabroni believes they will have to make tough decisions if they want to challenge the mighty Red Bull for the drivers’ championship this season.
Carlos Sainz was allowed to walk away from Silverstone with the maximum number of points and that sparked a huge debate in Italy as Charles Leclerc has been the more consistent performer this season.
The decision to let Sainz win at Silverstone did not sit well with many Formula 1 analysts and Scalabroni said, speaking about the decision-making at the Maranello-based team: “At this level, where they need to catch up a lot of points per effort on Verstappen and Red Bull, they need to find a system where there is a first driver and a support driver who have to work for the team’s profit.”

Enrique Scalabroni believes Ferrari is running out of time
Ferrari is currently second in the Drivers’ Championship with Charles Leclerc who has 170 points to his credit. Furthermore, Scalabroni has indicated that he doesn’t care who the No. 1 is, he just wants the team to make a decision so they can look at the racing scenarios from a unified perspective.
He compared the current situation in the team with the Williams pairing from 1986.”If the team wants to win, it shouldn’t be like Mansell and Piquet.“
Desperate for Ferrari to make a final decision, the engineer has indicated that from the French Grand Prix the team should support the driver who has scored more points and has had fewer problems so far in the season.
If Ferrari decides to go on points then it’s a no-brainer as Charles Leclerc is ahead of Carlos Sainz but when they factor in the DNFs then the picture is very different.
Both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have had their fair share of DNFs this season, and that’s been due to reliability issues taking center stage every now and then.
Ferrari have a decision to make and given the team’s tenuous position in the championship it will be quite interesting to see how the team decides and how it will deal with its two drivers during the upcoming French Grand Prix.
