“You get hyper and forget where you are sometimes,” Shannon Sharpe hints at Tony Romo nearly saying the N-word live during the AFC Championship broadcast

During Sunday’s live broadcast of the AFC championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals, CBS commentator Tony Romo seemed about to use the N-word before catching himself and changing the subject.

NFL Twitter immediately asked what Shannon Sharpe had to say on his “Undisputed” show with Skip Bayless about what the narrow end of the Hall of Famer was. Sharpe, 54, doesn’t seem to care about what Romo was about to say and dismisses it, noting that sometimes people forget they’re on TV.

Romo, 42, praised Chiefs running back Isaiah Pacheco for dodging tackles against the NFL’s biggest tackle team. He then started talking about the three Pacheco defenders to avoid and change the subject just before a racial slur escaped his lips.

“The extra meters. The hard yards. The end of the play,” Romo said. “Right there you three ni… talked about it. The team with the best duels. You don’t miss any duels. And that could be the difference.”

“It’s TV,” Sharpe tweeted in Romo’s defense. “You get hyper and sometimes forget where you are.”

Sharpe’s lack of response left others wondering if he was okay with Romo using the N-word in his everyday life as that was the only reason he would say it on TV. “What should I do if someone speaks in absentia? What is my role,” Sharpe replied.

This appears to be the case of a slip of the tongue for Romo, who probably didn’t mean to hurt anyone by uttering racist slang on the air. Sharpe was simply trying to put an end to the viral discussion by pointing out that it was nothing to make a fuss about.
