Former NBA star Yao Ming revealed on Monday that he gave a speech with Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai at a winter sports show they both attended in December.

In November, Peng announced in social media posts that Chinese Communist Party leader Zhang Gaoli had sexually assaulted her. The posts were quickly deleted, and Peng was then not seen in public for weeks. Many in the tennis world are concerned for her safety and many are still question the appearances she’s made are from back to the public eye.

“She was in pretty good shape that day,” Ming talked about talking to her on December 19. “We all had a good chat and asked a lot of questions about the sport because we were not familiar with it.”

Yao, the current president of the Chinese Basketball Association, and Peng have known each other for about two decades. He added that he and Peng both tried to get better acquainted with winter sports at the Beijing pre-Olympic exhibition.

“We asked a lot of questions about the match because we were not used to snow sports,” Ming said.

On December 19, the same day she attended the event and spoke with Ming, Peng denied ever making the sexual assault allegation – almost two months after the allegations were posted online.

“I have never said or written about anyone sexually assaulting me,” Peng said.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Dick Pound said the team had reached a unanimous decision that Peng was “fine” after a video call with IOC president Thomas Bach. Bach said Peng was “comfortable” in the video, which took place in early December while Peng had yet to appear in public.
