Xavi brutally honest as Barca exit Copa del Rey

As was the case with the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Real Madrid, Barcelona faced Athletic Bilbao in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey. Finally, Athletic Bilbao beat the Catalan team 3-2 in extra time to progress to the quarterfinals.

While Barca have seen players like Ferran Torres and Pedri deliver outstanding performances, mistakes in defense and their inability to stop quick-forward sequences from the Basque side say shared. Barca also struggled to create a high percentage of goalscoring opportunities while Athletic Bilbao played poorly.

In his press conference after the game, Barca coach Xavi Hernandez addressed where the Catalan side went wrong, where he noted that the club must now move on to the remaining two leagues where they still exist.

“We were beaten by the intensity, we had to win the duels, play second,” said Xavi. “Athletic was brilliant, well organised. I think Athletic played a great game. It is difficult for us to make progress. We will try. They defended with great intensity. They excel in duels. I have seen a very strong Athletic. We fought until the last minute.

“These are tough days, but there is nothing left to do but work and believe in the project. We have to recover from the defeat in the Super Cup and this match. But we have to think about La Liga and the Europa League.”

Xavi also added that players like Jordi Alba and Gerard Pique left the match with some discomfort. Pedri was sent off in the final stages of the game, although Xavi noted that he believes the Spain international is not facing any notable injuries.

As mentioned by Xavi, Barcelona will now only feature in La Liga and Europa League tournaments this season. Catalan edge will return to La Liga in the upcoming away game against Deportivo Alaves and will face Napoli in the opening leg of the Europa League knockout stage next month.
