Ahead of The Judds’ originally scheduled reunion tour, Wynonna Judd opened up about the death of her mother, Naomi Judd, and opened up about what she’s calling “a new chapter” in a new interview with CBS Sunday morning.
The 58-year-old country singer said she’s still “incredibly angry” after her mother’s suicide, adding that the emotion – which she says probably won’t go away “for a while” – is on it was unable to help her mother before ending her life.
“I didn’t know she was where she was when she ended it,” Wynonna Judd told correspondent Lee Cowan. “Because she’s had episodes before and she’s been getting better. And that’s what I live in: ‘Was there anything I should have looked for or known?’ Not me.”
Naomi Judd died in April from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. She was 76 years old. At the time, the Judd family said Naomi had battled PTSD and bipolar disorder.
Wynonna Judd is set to embark on a new tour, starting September 30, featuring primarily music by The Judds, on a reunion tour for the duo. CBS was present at one of the tour rehearsals where Wynonna bursts into tears as the first notes of the ballad “Love Is Alive” begin to play.
“When I go on stage that first night, I’m probably going to say something like, ‘It’s not supposed to be like that,’ because it’s not like that, is it? It’s supposed to be us two. And I will be angry because she is not there,” she concluded.
Wynonna’s sister, actress Ashley Judd, has also previously spoken out about Naomi’s death, revealing that she was the one who discovered her mother’s body. In a written commentary for The New York Times, Ashley explained that it was the family’s request that all police reports and records be kept secret as the investigation progressed, since family members divulged many personal items in the heat of interrogation after discovering her mother’s body.
In her interview with CBS, Wynonna also described her relationship with her sister as “so united right now, I think more than we’ve been in a long time.”
