Wrestling from Belal Muhammad too much for Vicente Luque

Five takedowns from Belal Muhammad help him defeat Vicente Luque in the UFC Vegas 51 headliner

Belal Muhammad held his ground and dominated the grappling game, revenge on an old rival and a top-five position in the UFC welterweight rankings by defeating Vicente Luque in the UFC Vegas 51 main event.

This was a rematch after their first encounter at UFC 205 in November 2016, in which Luque scored a KO over Muhammad in the first round.

Both men had their fair share of strikes in the opening round, with both men landing kicks. Muhammad seemed to have the stronger start, however, thanks in part to a strong takedown he landed with some ground-and-pound to follow.

Luque tried to apply more pressure in the second round, but Muhammad answered again – landing the better shots in terms of quantity and quality. Muhammad also landed another takedown and got to Luque’s back, though with no real threat of submission.

However, the tide seemed to turn in the third when Luque shook Muhammad early with a quick left hook. He followed up with a few more left punches and was able to parry a takedown attempt from Muhammad. Luque continued to pound Muhammad – this time Luque got the upper hand in their bargain. And while Muhammad landed another takedown, Luque impressed by getting back on his feet and putting Muhammad under pressure again.

Luque looked to continue his offensive swing with more punches to start the fourth round, but Muhammad landed another takedown and got caught in both the arm triangle and side control before falling off while trying to reach Luque’s back. This round could have gone either way, with Luque being better on his feet but once again having little in the way of an answer to Muhammad’s wrestling.

Muhammad attempted a couple of takedowns again early in the fifth but one was stuffed and the other, Luque, countered by looking for a choke he couldn’t get. However, Muhammad got up again. And as he guided Luque through the cage and got a takedown, it seemed like it was over from there as he brought the momentum back fully to his side.

All three judges scored four rounds for Muhammad, with two 49-46 totals and one 49-47.
