Amid news of WWE misconduct and hush money payments, Rita Chatterton, the then World Wrestling Federation’s first female referee, repeated her allegations of rape against WWE CEO and Chairman Vince McMahon in an interview with New York Magazine.

McMahon has resigned from his functions while the company’s board of directors conducts an investigation into his affair with another former WWE employee, who is said to have been paid $3 million in a separation agreement barring her from either the company or the relationship belittle McMahon. The investigation is also looking into allegations of misconduct against McMahon and WWE head of talent relations, John Laurinaitis.

However, Chatterton’s accusation goes back much further. She first accused McMahon of raping her in the summer of 1986 during an interview with Geraldo Rivera on his 1992 show Now it can be told. During the interview, Chatterton claimed McMahon proposed sex to her during a private meeting in order to get a higher-paying WWF contract.

By that time, the statute of limitations for rape had expired and no charges were ever brought.

McMahon hired Chatterton to referee WWF for his story in which American singer Cyndi Lauper managed wrestler Wendi Richter. After she was hired, Chatterton recounted New York Magazine that her boyfriend and former wrestler Leonard Inzitari warned her to stay away from Vince.

“He could make me or break me, and if I didn’t please him, I balled black, that was it,” Chatterton told Rivera in 1992. “I was ready.”

Chatterton tells New York Magazine that McMahon pretended not to know her when they both attended Andre The Giant’s funeral. McMahon and his wife later filed a lawsuit against Chatterton and Rivera alleging false rape allegations. They later dropped the charges as WWE had its hands full with independent trials child abuse, Sexual harassmentand human trafficking illegal performance-enhancing drugs.

Today, McMahon and the WWE face new controversy as the misconduct investigation continues. His daughter Stephanie McMahon serves as interim CEO and chair of wrestling promotions while McMahon retains creative control of ongoing WWE storylines.

News of WWE’s internal investigation into McMahon prompted former wrestler Leonard Inzitari to corroborate Chatterton’s allegation against McMahon in it New York Magazine Report.

“Was she taken advantage of? Absolutely,” said Inzitar New York Magazine. “Is she afraid of death? Absolutely. Was that what she wanted? Probably not.”

Both Inzitari and Chatterton told the publication they weren’t surprised by McMahon’s current investigation, and Chatterton added She is glad that allegations against him are being investigated.

“Now this girl is coming, I’m sure others will come forward,” Chatterton said New York Magazine. “Because we’re not the only two. I have no doubts about that.”
