Woodpecker hides more than 300kg of acorns indoors, says pest control company

A woodpecker in California has hidden at least 317 kg of acorns in a house wall, according to a pest control company.

Nick’s Extreme Pest Control shared five photos of the discovery — and subsequent removal.

The images showed a literally crazy scene in which a worker pulled mountains of acorns off the wall.

The bird apparently made holes in the house and then stored the acorns in the walls.

“I came across this at a job,” noted Nicks Extreme Pest Control on social media. “Bird was a bit of a hoarder.”

The Post also noted that the worker filled about eight garbage bags with acorns, which the company said weighed a total of 700 pounds (317 kg).

“Unreal has never encountered anything like this,” the post reads.

The photos were shared on Facebook on January 25. Since then, the post has received more than 700 reactions, at least 525 shares, and numerous comments.

Some people expressed concern that the bird had lost its hiding place.

“This woodpecker will be devastated. I worked so hard for this fortune and it’s all gone. Like a millionaire suddenly losing all the money he’s worked tirelessly to make,” one person wrote.

Another person shared similar feelings.

“I really pray that you will return these nuts to whoever put them there. Maybe someone could build the bird its own (dog-sized) aviary to keep its nuts in!”

The pest control company told The National Desk that the acorns had to be discarded because they were covered in fiberglass and rodent droppings.

The company also responded to multiple comments on social media, saying the bird stuck the acorns down the home’s chimney after drilling hundreds of holes in the wood paneling and entering through vents in the attic.

“Acorns were stacked from (the) bottom floor to about 20 feet high in (the) attic,” the company noted.

The company also said that residents of the home “saw small worms coming out of the wall that looked like maggots but were actually (a) type of mealworm.”

One commenter noted that woodpeckers eat the worms that are often found in the nuts.

Some people were curious how a woodpecker was determined to be the culprit.

“[There were]woodpecker holes throughout the house,” the company noted in the comments. “(There were) acorns stored all over (on the) siding and trim. (The woodpecker) destroyed (the) exterior (of) the house completely with all the holes everywhere. That bird was crazy – we actually saw it there when we were there to put more into the holes it was creating.”
