The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrade for The witcher 3 won’t arrive any time soon. In fact, CD Projekt Red announced today that it will be postponed indefinitely. This follows the decision to bring development of the next-gen version back in-house, having previously been in the hands of Saber Interactive’s Russia office.
“We have decided to let our in-house development team do the remaining work on the next-gen version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt“, CDPR wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. “We are currently evaluating the scope of work to be carried out and as such have to postpone the release of Q2 until further notice.”
Reported back Sept 2020the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrade for The witcher 3 promised a “range of visual and technical improvements – including ray tracing and faster loading times”. CDPR confirmed at the time that Saber Interactive somehow managed to do that port the game to the Nintendo Switch in 2019 would lead the development of the next-gen versions. “You already know our technology very well,” CDPR President Adam Kiciński told investors at the time.
While Saber Interactive is headquartered in Florida, its first game studio was founded in St. Petersburg, Russia, the same studio as that Covered work on the 4K and Switch versions of The witcher 3. However, after the February invasion of Ukraine, CDPR condemned the attack by Russia and stopped selling its games and services in the country. other companies followedwith something Losing ties with Russian game studios about the war.
It’s not clear if CDPR’s decision to end the next-gen version of The witcher 3 internally related to the war or is the result of other considerations. The rumor about the change first appeared in the coverage of Russian-language gambling sites late last month.
“We have no further comments or explanations to make at this time,” a spokesman for CDPR said kotaku when asked for the connection. Saber Interactive did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The X/S version of the PS5 and Xbox series was supposed to arrive last year but has been pushed back to this summer. After the rough start of Cyberpunk 2077, CDPR has since had its hands full to continue fixing, updating and improving this game, which received a next-gen upgrade earlier this year. The company also recently announced that it has already started work on one new open world witcher Game with Unreal Engine 5.
From next year The witcher 3 turns eight years old, although it wouldn’t be the first to receive a next-gen version this far after release. GTA V has now appeared on three consecutive generations of consoles, despite its launch in 2013.
