goalkeeper Matt Murray was traded Monday by the Ottawa Senators to the Toronto Maple Leafs for future consideration. Murray is 5-12-2 with a 3.05 clean sheet average, a .906 save percentage and 1 shutout in 20 starts with the Senators this season. Murray is 132-78-22 with a 2.77 clean sheet average, a .911 percent save and 14 shutouts in 246 games for the Pittsburg Penguins and Ottawa Senators.
The 28-year-old goaltender has a 4-year, $25 million contract with an average annual value of $6.25 million, which was signed on October 9, 2020 with the Ottawa Senators. The Maple Leafs received a third-round pick in the 2023 NHL draft and a seventh-round pick in the 2024 draft. The Senators will keep 25% of Murray’s salary as part of the trade.

The Leafs take on goalie Matt Murray
Matt Murray’s time with the Ottawa Senators did not go as planned after being acquired in a trade with the Pittsburg Penguins. He won the Stanley Cup twice with the Penguins. He had a career-worst result in the 2020-21 season with 10-13-1, a 3.38 GAA and an .893 save ratio in 27 games, 25 of which were starts.
He had a 0-5-0 score that season with a 3.26 GAA and an .890 save ratio before being placed on waivers on November 27. The following day he was assigned to Belleville of the American Hockey League, as noted on nhl.com. Although an injury forced him to miss Ottawa’s last 29 games, he was plating relatively well upon his return from Belleville.

Ottawa Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said: “We are grateful for Matt’s contributions and wish him well.” He was selected by the Pittsburg Penguins in the 2012 NHL Draft. As for his move to the Leafs, he’s expected to fill the void left by former goaltender Jack Campbell as he has a chance to break into the unrestricted free agents bracket this Wednesday.
