Winter Classic: Potential locations and matches for the NHL outdoor event 2023 edition

Winter Classic 2022 is one of the coldest sporting events ever held, but it doesn’t seem to affect St. Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild. Teams add up to 10 goals in the Blues’ 6-4 win where the outside temperature was -8 degrees in the beginning.

With the 2022 Winter Classics officially published, it’s time to start trying to figure out where NHL may choose to host their annual outdoor game in 2023. Usually, the Winter Classic features more historic teams in a single game. MLB, NFL or College football The minimum stadium can hold up to 40,000 people.

There are plenty of iconic locations that have hosted the Winter Classic, but there are also plenty of venues that have never had the pleasure of doing so. As such, there are a lot of directions the NHL can go when it comes to the Winter Classic. Here are some potential locations and possible matches for Winter Classic 2023.

Location: yankee stadium
Possible matches: Rangers compare to Islanders
The Battle of New York is sure to be an exciting one, and even more special at such an iconic venue as Yankee Stadium. It should be noted that Rangers will have to be the away team no matter what. Madison Square Garden would risk getting more than $40 million a year in property tax exemptions if any of its home teams (including the Rangers) played their “home games” in New York City rather than at home. The most famous competition in the world.

All that aside, Yankee Stadium has no problem hosting non-MLB related events. This place annually hosts the Pinstripe Bowl and is also the home ground of New York City FC. Rangers and Islanders have been near the top half of the Eastern Conference standings in recent years, so this matchup will likely come with a lot of bragging rights for the winning team.

Location: Beaver Stadium
Possible matches: Flyers compare to Penguins
If you talk about hockey in the northeast, you have to mention the Pennsylvania battle between the Flyers and the Penguins. While the two teams have had a total of four Winter Classic appearances since its inception, we’ve never seen the Flyers and Penguins fight on one of the biggest stages the sport has to offer. Both teams have hosted the Winter Classics with the Penguins hosted at Heinz Field in 2011 and the Flying Team hosted at Citizens Bank Park in 2012. Beaver Stadium, which serves as the field home to the Penn State football team, has a capacity of more than 106,000 and would be a great neutral venue for these two teams to go head-to-head.

Location: Nissan Stadium
Possible matches: Blackhawks compare to Carnivores
The Predator took part in the Winter Classic 2020 when they played Stars at the Cotton Bowl. However, it’s time for Nashville to host a Winter Classic of their own. We’ve seen six different Winter Classics held at football stadiums and it’s a great way to engage the fans. Nashville is a great destination for anyone visiting and having an Original Six team like the Blackhawks on would really make this a must-see.

Location: Fenway Park
Possible matches: Lightning compare to Bruins
There is never anything wrong with visiting an old Winter Classic location. That makes Fenway Park one of the sport’s most iconic locations. The Bruins hosted the Flyers back in Winter Classic 2010, but it would be great if Green Monster returned as the iconic setting. A game against the Lightning would be interesting as both teams are usually near the East end and the Lightning can’t really host the Winter Classic as their home ground is in Florida.

Location: Lambeau field
Possible matches: Blackhawks vs. Red Wings
Is there any NFL stadium more iconic than Lambeau Field? Not in my books. That’s why the NHL holding the Winter Classic at the Green Bay Packers’ home would be a great idea. It is worth noting that Wisconsin does not have a professional hockey team in the state. However, the Red Wings are the closest next team to Green Bay and have a lot of appeal when it comes to historical traditions. On the other hand, the Blackhawks have participated in four Winter Classics. Having a match between two Original Six teams at a venue as ripe with tradition as Lambeau Field would be an absolutely phenomenal event for the NHL.
