Wimbledon Roll of Honor
Wimbledon Roll of Honor

Wimbledon is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. Every tennis player has a dream to compete in this premier grass court tournament. Winning the championships is a great achievement and the winner’s name will be inscribed on the tournament roll of honor All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC).

The winners of the men’s singles were named with the first letter of their name and last name. For example the current Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic on the roll of honor as ‘N. Djokovic”, while women had a tradition of writing “Miss” or “Mrs” in front of their first names. For example the current Wimbledon winner Ashleigh Barty is written as “Miss A. Barty”.

Now Wimbledon has decided to remove the ‘Mrs’ and ‘Miss’ from the honors committee in a bid to promote equality through sport. Wimbledon made a small but significant step that will have a major impact on how the players might be viewed in terms of their surname or marital status.

Wimbledon faces a serious situation after being stripped of ranking points.

For now, the tournament is surrounded by a lot of uncertainties as the ranking points offered by the ATP and WTA are lost. The tennis federations took the move to counter Wimbledon’s decision to suspend the Russian and Belarusian players. With Wimbledon not deviating from its stance, the Tennis Association, with its equally strong will, would expect an interesting few months ahead of the tournament.

Many players are not really motivated to play when the prize money is expected to drop and no ranking points up for grabs, but Wimbledon hopes its prestige would still be enough to attract strong rivals.
