Willson Contreras is venting his frustration at the Cubs trade rumors
Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras is poised for the MLB trade deadline to end after years of being hung around rumors.
The Cubs haven’t made a significant contract offer to Contreras since 2018 — two seasons after he led Chicago to its first World Series in 108 years.
Since then, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that Contreras would eventually be traded for prospects. Let the Chicago front desk wait until the last possible moment.
Contreras stays with the team and he still contributes at a high level. The 30-year-old made the NL All-Star this season, and despite a recent dip, he still averages .252/.365/.453 and is one of the best backstops in all of baseball.
But that doesn’t mean the little things don’t get to him.
Willson Contreras hit by Cubs trade rumours
Contreras opened up to reporters after Sunday’s game in which the Cubs lost 4-0 to the Giants.
“To be honest, this is the first time in my career that I’m in this position,” said Contreras, according to the Chicago Tribune. “It’s not easy. I just want this to be over. If they trade me, they trade me. If they don’t want to trade me, they don’t. But I just want that day to pass and I want to keep focusing on that concentrate on playing baseball. I just want it to be over.”
Manager DavidRoss had reiterated this point a few days before Contreras’ comments, saying that the trade talks were perhaps getting to him more than he cared to admit.
“We’ll see what happens,” said Contreras. “It’s going to be a long day. It’s been a long, long, long week. A long, long month for me. But I’m ready for this to be over.”
It’s finally over on Tuesday at 6pm ET. Chances are Contreras will be on his way to a new team by then.
