Willard hires Tony Skinn, Coach with Local Relationships, to be an assistant for the Maryland Men’s Basketball Team – CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) – Maryland basketball head coach Kevin Willard had his first major hire, bringing in assistant coach Tony Skinn, who grew up at Takoma Park and played college basketball at George Mason in Fairfax , Va.

Skinn served as an assistant for Ohio State during the 2021-2022 season. Seventh-seeded Buckeyes were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament on Sunday after losing to second-seeded Villanova, 71-61.

Prior to joining Ohio State, Skinn was a member of the Willard staff at Seton Hall for three seasons.

In Skinn’s first season with the Pirates, Seton Hall made it through 20-14 and made it to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth year in a row. The 2019-20 roster went all the way to 21-9 and won the regular-season Big East championship, the school’s first tournament since 1993.

Based on his biography on Seton Hall’s website, Skinn worked closely with bodyguards Myles Powell and Quincy McKnight, the team’s two top scorers. Powell is currently on the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers roster.

A member of the George Mason Patriots, Skinn, who was born in Nigeria, scored 1,079 points over three seasons and was selected by the All-CAA twice. He was part of one of the best Cinderella stories in March Madness history, the 11th Patriots beat 6th seed Michigan State, 3rd seed North Carolina, 7th seed Wichita and first seed 1 Connecticut reached the 2006 Finals.

Skinn averaged 12.6 points per game that season.

Each Ohio StateSkinn competed at the 2012 Olympics as a member of the Nigerian national team, which placed 10th at the tournament.
