Will Zatoris came so close to forcing the US Open playoffs

Will Zalatoris came this close to forcing a playoff at the 2022 US Open. Instead, Matt Fitzpatrick won his first major championship.

Again, it wasn’t to be for Will Zlatoris. Zulatoris finished second to Justin Thomas at this year’s PGA Championship. Unfortunately, he’ll have to wait until next month at The Open Championship for another shot at winning a major championship. Zlatoris narrowly missed the US Open.

Zulatoris was in position on the 18th green to force a playoff with England’s Matt Fitzpatrick taking a one-shot lead and leading into the last hole. The 25-year-old hit his approach squarely on the putting surface about 14 feet from the cup, but his putt to force a playoff was just a touch off the line.

Will Zalatoris had fought back after losing a tie after a costly bogey on the par-4 15 to take the lead at the US Open 2022. Zatoris was two shots behind Matt Fitzpatrick as they both approached the #16 tee.

A 6-iron in the par-3 16th left Zatoris with just a 6-foot putt to get back in the tournament. He pocketed the putt and moved to the lead in one shot with two holes left. Zatoris stepped on the tee box at No. 18 from a deficit and blasted his drive onto the fairway.

An approach to the green from around 130 meters left Zatoris inside the leader. Two putts by Matt Fitzpatrick put the Englishman a shot clear, but Zatoris had one final shot.

Will Zlatoris inspected his upcoming putt, positioned himself over his ball and drove it to the hole. Zalatoris’ putt went just to the left of the cup and the University of Wake Forest graduate crouched and dropped his putter behind his back as he took the opportunity to win his first big slide off the hole .

This was Zulatoris’ second runner-up finish at a Major this season and the third in his career. Zlatoris also came up just short at The Masters in 2020, a tournament won by Hideki Matsuyama.
