Will Smith Slap Drives 219% Viewer Growth for E!’s Oscars Coverage

ABC wasn’t the only network to experience a ratings surge for this year’s Oscars. E! linear viewership for the post-show more than doubled and cross-platform audience engagement more than quadrupled with coverage of the Oscars, largely due to interest in Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the ceremony, diversity only learned.

Led by new Live From E! host Laverne Cox, who hosted the long-running E! Host Giuliana Rancic, after being a solo host last season after many years with Ryan Seacrest, Oscars red carpet coverage surged from E! compared to the previous year by 25%. E! had 321 million cross-platform engagements on Sunday and Monday, roughly split between the two days, a 219% increase over last year’s Oscars coverage and an 88% increase over content for the 2020 awards show. The Smith Rock incident alone drew nearly 40 million interactions across E! after himself.

This year’s E! Coverage of the Oscars recorded 13.5 million video minutes, up 39% year-on-year, driven by a push into Instagram Reels and TikTok.

Per E!, the two E! News digital-exclusive live streams shared on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and E! Video views online exceeded 5 million and Monday morning’s live stream Post Pop grew nearly 50% year over year.

In addition, the E! the highest total time recorded on E! was spent! Online since its redesign almost 2 years ago, with 6 million uniques reached and 6.3 million video minutes viewed.
