He mentioned the incident in his speech.

“Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” he said at the opening of his speech alluding to his confrontation with Rock. “In this moment in my life, in this moment, I am overwhelmed by what God is calling me to do and be in this world.”

“I am being called to love people and protect people,” he said through tears.

Smith says you have to be able to abuse and disrespect you.

“You have to smile and pretend it’s okay,” he said in his speech. “I want to be a vessel of love,” he said.

Several times during his speech the video is cut off but you can still hear his speech.

“I would like to apologize to the academy to all of my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment, I don’t cry because I won the award,” he said.
