Will Jack Hughes still be the number 1 pick? – The Athletic

With two years on from the 2019 NHL Draft, this could be the season where we see top prospects explode with the rest of the league. So now I see how this class has changed with a new ranking of how I would order the players if I picked them today.

The ratings are based on previous seasons, so any new information from NHL training camp or the first few weeks of a season in other leagues will not be included.

For rejoin prospects, they are eligible to be ranked the year they were drafted, not the years before.

TIER 1: NHL Expected All-Star

Jack Hughes, C (choice number 1)

Trevor Zegras, C (choose number 9)

These two were teammates at the US NTDP. Hughes is an excellent skater with lots of fouls who is the #1 pick and has a more traditional skill set to play right in the NHL. Zegras’ skating has never been a selling point, so he needs more time to build up his strength to become NHL-ready. But his hockey sense is exceptional and gives him this high anticipation after a great 2020-21 season.

TIER 2: Projected Balloon NHL All-Star and top player of the lineup

Kirby Dach, C (choice number 3)

Dylan Cozens, C (choose number 7)

Moritz Seider, RHD (choose number 6)

Kaapo Kakko, RW (choose number 2)
