On Monday, the 60-year-old uploaded a video showing him hanging out of a biplane and grinning widely as he prepares to free fall.
“Hello everyone, here we are over breathtaking South Africa,” he calls.
“We’re filming Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning parts one and two.
“I didn’t want the year to end without thanking you all for coming to the theater and thank you for supporting Top Gun: Maverick.”
Suddenly Mission Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie appears on the screen and seems to urge Cruise to hurry.
“Hey listen, we really gotta roll, we gotta get that shot!” says McQuarrie.
“Right,” Cruise asks, “are you coming,” to which McQuarrie replies, “Not on your life!”
“Good luck,” he adds, before Cruise just steps off the plane, still addressing the camera.
“Where have I been? Oh yeah, thanks for supporting Top Gun!” he says.
“As always, thank you for allowing us to entertain you.
“It really is the honor of life. I am very happy.”
After a moment’s pause, Cruise says, “I’m running out of altitude so I better get back to work, we gotta get that shot!”
“You have a very safe and happy holiday,” he says as the ocean expands beneath him.
Cruise’s parachute appears to open just a few feet above the water.
The video was viewed by more than 4 million people, and fans were blown away by the actor’s spirit of adventure and seeming calmness while jumping out of a plane.
“A true action legend,” wrote one person.
“Thank you Tom for remembering the moviegoer and giving us a reason to go to the movies in the first place and making our experience in the theaters so much more exciting and enjoyable,” wrote another fan.
“Oh, and I hope you landed safely.”
“Holy smoke!! Tom Cruise is so freaking awesome!!” one Twitter user was delighted.
“I thought he would just hang on the side for a while but then the camera pulled away!! Go Tom!!”
“Just so great!” shouted another.
“Living legend. You are the reason movies should be seen on the big screen,” said another.
Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One is slated to hit theaters next year, with Part Two coming in 2024.
