Why does Everton vs Manchester United kick off at 7pm on Sunday?

This Sunday, Manchester United travel to Everton in the Premier League at an unusual time of 19:00 BST.

The decision raised eyebrows as some fans were unhappy with the irregular TV slot for the game at Goodison Park.

Here’s The Athletic explaining why the kick-off time was chosen…

So, what are the “traditional” weekend kick-off times?

The Everton v United game is a departure from the kick-off times we have become accustomed to in recent Premier League seasons. Games were usually played at 12:30pm, 3:00pm and 5:30pm on Saturdays, 2:00pm and 4:30pm on Sundays and 8:00pm on Fridays and Mondays.

BT Sport normally broadcasts Saturday’s game at 12:30pm, while Sky Sports shows everyone else except Saturday at 3pm – which is protected by England’s football blackout law.

What is the reason for the 7pm kick-off time then?

BT Sport had chosen the match between Everton and United as their match of the week.

However, Erik ten Hag’s side are set to play a Europa League group stage game against Omonia Nicosia on Thursday in Cyprus. If their game against Everton was selected for the usual BT slot, there would be less than 48 hours between games.

And for this season, BT have committed to using the 7pm Sunday slot if either team involved in their game is playing in Europe on the previous Wednesday or Thursday night.

Was the 12:30 slot a problem?
