Who starts? Who is closing? The Warriors’ Internal Competition and Other Playoff Thoughts and Issues – The Athletic

Steve Kerr knows his starting lineup for Game 1 against Denver on Saturday, but he’s not revealing it yet. It’s playoff playcraft for sure, and it’s also part of the Warriors’ larger story in the postseason and beyond.

They will do whatever it takes to win each game with the lineup combinations that work best, and then try to win the next and the next, perhaps with slightly or very different combinations – and they’re hoping that adds up to a sixth Journey to the finals in eight years and a fourth championship save in that span.

But there’s also an intriguing internal competition going on as Kerr and his staff set up their rotations and plan their strategies against Denver. There are roles to be won. Has Jordan Poole earned a spot on the starting line-up (which would likely knock Kevon Looney out) even with Stephen Curry back for Saturday as expected? There are minutes to gain. If Andrew Wiggins is struggling, could he be swapped out for Looney, Andre Iguodala, Gary Payton II or Otto Porter Jr at critical times? You have to make a name for yourself.

Very likely there are important personnel decisions coming up in the future that will largely relate to what happens in those next few games.
