Who joins the Blackpool Combat Club and meets Zack Saber Jr.?

A mystery opponent is chosen by Bryan Danielson to face Zack Saber Jr. on Sunday, June 26 at AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door. Who could that be?

The AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view was destined to be a dream event for professional wrestling fans. While the card is relatively strong, it lacks big stars who are out through injury. One of those stars is Bryan Danielson.

On the June 22 episode of AEW Dynamite, Danielson approached the ring to inform fans that he was originally scheduled to face Zack Saber Jr. at Forbidden Door, but he is no longer able to do so as he is unable to play for the competition is allowed. However, he did announce that he will be handpicking his replacement to not only face Saber in the pay-per-view, but also to join the Blackpool Combat Club stable and on June 29 in the Blood and Guts match against the Jericho Appreciation Society follow Dynamite.

That leaves fans wondering who the mystery wrestler could be.

Who will replace Bryan Danielson at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door?

Based on the reports that have surfaced so far, it will be a true mystery.

Given the teasing Danielson made last Wednesday, fans immediately began to think of Cesaro, real name Claudio Castagnoli. earlier this year, Castagnoli’s contract with WWE has expired and both sides failed to reach agreement on a new deal.

According to Fightful Select (subscription required), Castagnoli has been to the Flatbacks Wrestling School in Orlando, FL several times over the past few weeks training in the ring. However, Fightful says they haven’t heard if Castagnoli will actually be Danielson’s replacement at Forbidden Door and for the Blood and Guts match.

Another name linked to the Forbidden Door event is Johnny Gargano, who has been linked to every mystery opponent teased by AEW since his WWE contract expired in December.

Garagno posted on his Twitter account earlier in the week that he will be in Chicago for the Chicago Card Show on Sunday, June 26th. On this very day, Forbidden Door is taking place at the United Center in Chicago. Gargano elaborated on that in a reply, saying that this gig was booked months in advance, but he knows “5 percent” of fans “will believe.” [he’s] really tell the truth.”

Company President Tony Khan spoke about Danielson being removed from the card but singled out the mystery wrestler who will take on Saber during a June 24 media call.

“It was one of those perfect situations too, because seldom do the stars align where you have a mysterious opponent and a chance to build a moment like that,” Khan said. h/t Wrestling Inc. “It’s very fitting to come back to the United Center where we only had one show and it was a great moment and I’m sure we’ll have that great moment.

“I think there’s going to be a lot of great moments on the show, but one thing I know is that great moment when we introduce Zack Saber Jr.’s mysterious opponent. I’m really excited and wish it had happened under different circumstances.”

The only way to find out who will face off against Zack Saber Jr. at the Forbidden Door and in the Blackpool Combat Club for Blood and Guts match is to tune in to the pay-per-view event this Sunday.
