Who has the most Sweet 16 appearances in a row?

Reaching 16 Sweet in Mad March is a huge achievement, but which show has the record for the most consecutive appearances?

It’s one thing to be a consistent team in doing the NCAA Tournament. It’s a whole different thing for a show to get into March Madness and then find believable success when they hit field 68.

One of the best points of a program that achieves such a thing is getting through the first weekend and making it to Sweet 16. That means winning two games as the competition increases with each win.

In the 2022 NCAA Tournament, the Gonzaga Bulldogs were able to do just that, appearing in 16 consecutive Sweet 16 games for Mark Few’s show.

However, hitting that mark has many fans wondering what Sweet’s record of 16 consecutive appearances really is and how close the Bulldogs are.

16 Most consecutive Sweet appearances in March Madness

While the record against Zags over the past seven years has been pretty impressive, the Bulldogs still shy away from the record, a mark coincidentally set by two of the biggest rivals in the world of college basketball. .

The North Carolina Tar Heels first made their mark for the 16 most consecutive Sweet appearances with nine appearances between 1985-93, resulting in the National Championship for the illustrious show in late 1993.

That mark was then matched by Heels’ biggest rival, Duke Blue Devils, from 1998-2006. Duke also won a title in that run with their net cut in 2001.

However, given the way things have turned out pretty late for Gonzaga, it’s safe to say they can challenge UNC and Duke for the all-time record.
