Chicago White Sox pitcher Lance Lynn has been out for at least a month with a minor tear in his knee. Who will the team replace him with?
Lynn is a top-five AL Cy Young contender at his best, which he has been in his last three healthy seasons. Unfortunately, it is on the shelf at the beginning of the 2022 season.
Rick Hahn announced the White Sox’s star starter would be out for at least four months and would be reevaluated shortly thereafter due to the injury.
“It’s part of the game,” said Hahn on Sunday afternoon. “I know we have a very deep and talented squad. Like any club, we will face some adversity over the next seven months. The strength of the men in this clubhouse and in the coaching room will serve us well.”
Lance Lynn replaced
Lynn is not easy to “replace” as this post suggests. But someone has to enter the rotation to start the season. The first dibs will likely go to internal options like Vince Velasquez and Reynaldo Lopez, both right-handers who can fill the bottom of the rotation.
MLB Trade Rumors hinted at this Sunday when Lynn was scheduled to receive an MRI:
“Swingmen Reynaldo Lopez and Vince Velasquez were involved in the bullpen picture, although at least one of the two hurlers will likely enter the rotation if Lynn’s injury requires an IL trip. Velasquez signed a one-year, $3 million deal in March to provide some extra pitching depth, although the White Sox certainly didn’t plan on having to use that depth anytime soon,” MLBTR’s Mark Polishuk wrote.
Chicago White Sox rotation without Lance Lynn
Without Lynn, the White Sox rotation is as follows, according to the team’s website:
- Luke Giolito
- Dylan stops
- Michael Kopech
- Dallas Keechel
The Sox could also go outside of the organization to sign pitching help, although the help wouldn’t be immediate unless it was through trades. Each free agent would need some adjustments before being included in the rotation.
With Chicago already shorthanded in terms of pitching, Chicago may be better served if it gives Lopez and/or Velasquez a chance to start the season.
