Which is the best program?

Saturday’s Final Four matchup between Duke and North Carolina feels like it’s marbles for everyone, but which program was more successful?

The stage is set for an epic Final Four duel between Duke and North Carolina Saturday night in New Orleans. Media coverage of the game will be second to none as this competition feels set to decide the rights of basketball pride across the state for the next decade.

The rivalry between the two ACC superpowers is the fiercest in college basketball, with both programs claiming blue-blood status in the sport. Any school can fly many championship flags, but which program has actually been the most successful throughout its history?

Do Duke or UNC have more all-time wins?

While no school can claim the honor for most all-time wins (Kansas recently overtook Kentucky for the honor), North Carolina takes the lead. Factoring in the 28 wins they earned en route to the Final Four, the Tar Heels have 2,322 wins, the third-highest total in college basketball history.

Duke isn’t too far behind, checking in with 2,246 wins, which puts them fourth on the all-time list. No other program comes close to challenging the Blue Devils in terms of wins.

Do Duke or UNC have more NCAA tournament appearances?

The ledger is now 2-0 in favor of the Tar Heels as North Carolina has had more tournament berths than Duke throughout their history. This year’s March Madness appearance is North Carolina’s 52nd, trailing only Kentucky’s 59 bids for the most in college basketball history.

The Blue Devils find themselves fifth on the list with a solid 44 appearances in NCAA tournaments. The two teams directly ahead of Duke are Kansas and UCLA, each with 50 games in March Madness.

Do Duke or UNC have more trips to the Final Four?

This is the third straight category in which the Tar Heels have an advantage over Duke. North Carolina has made the Final Four 21 times, the most in college basketball history, and has an active streak that has seen them make the Final Four for nine straight decades. No other program has accomplished this feat in more than seven decades.

Duke isn’t far behind on that count either, sitting third on the list tied with Kentucky with 17 Final Four appearances. Both schools trail second-place UCLA by a Final Four appearance.

Do Duke or UNC Have More NCAA Championships?

They can clean it up for the Tar Heels as they also have an advantage over the Blue Devils at national titles. However, the lead in this category is much narrower, with North Carolina’s six titles just one place ahead of Duke’s five.

Krzyzewski is responsible for all five of Duke’s championships and may even take the lead himself with North Carolina riding into the sunset with another national title. That little fact will add even more juice to what should be a stellar showdown in New Orleans on Saturday night.
