All the teams in the Eastern Conference are finally halfway through their season. With less than 41 games left and the knockout scene in the spotlight, the race for 50 wins is on.
While that’s an arbitrary number, the team that gets to the first 50 games is often set up to take the 1st seed or be considered one of the real contenders in their respective conventions. The top five teams in the Eastern Conference are one win apart, so bet on who will reach that milestone first.
Miami Heat: +100
The Heat are in the best position to get their first 50 wins. They currently have the most wins in the Eastern Conference (28) and are healthy again. Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler are back in the lineup, giving them defensive and offensive capabilities they haven’t had in weeks.
Miami had one of the most effective attack lines (attack rating 112.2), and now Adebayo provides them with a defensive anchor. If the Heat can keep doing what they’re doing, 50 wins will soon come.
Brooklyn Nets: +150
The The Nets won’t have Kevin Durant for a while, but I don’t see that as a problem as much as others do. Kyrie Irving can only play on the road, and 10 of the Nets’ next 13 games are on the road. In the short term, Brooklyn can stay on the water and wait for Durant to return and join them.
Nets, based solely on star power, are never calculated.
Milwaukee Bucks: +165
Milwaukee has yet to complete his stride, but the Bucks are arguably the best player in the world. That erases a lot of mistakes. One concern I have with the Bucks is that they have the toughest remaining fixture schedule in the league. Until Jrue Holiday returns, there will be plenty of Antetokounmpo roles.
The Bucks remain at the top of the top 10 in offensive and defensive ratings, but the never-ending schedule of contenders will be tough.
Cleveland Cavaliers: +175
Although they are young and unproven, the Cavaliers are a sneaky team to achieve this feat. Cleveland has the easiest schedule left and can take advantage of that to a 50-game win. The Cavaliers’ attack is average, but their defense is solid and will carry them to victory. In terms of defensive rating, the Cavs are the third best defender in the league.
With an easy schedule and beautiful young players, Cleveland can get the job done.
Chicago Bulls: +200
While the Cavaliers are winning on defense, the Bulls are looking for some. Chicago has the worst defensive stats in the league in a four-game losing streak. The Bulls are falling while so many other teams are finding their strides and it’s not a pretty sight. Chicago is the No. 1 seed. However, until Zach LaVine and Alex Caruso return, they will continue to slide.
