Where to place target dummies in Teamfight Tactics (TFT)

Target dummies have been a common tool in Teamfight Tactics (TFT) since Set 4, where they were a drop item from Lucky Lanterns. The problem with target dummies, however, is that they can feel a bit random. They do no harm, so what do you do with them? If you’ve always wanted to use target dummies in your TFT games, let us explain how to make them as effective as possible.

What are target dummies?

Target dummies are small wooden statues that you can get in Hextech Augments. They come in pairs of two in the Phony Frontline expansion. First, they start at 500 health and 40 armor. However, they will get stronger over time. Your star level (silver, gold, platinum) increases at levels 2-1, 4-1, 6-1, and 8-1.

How to position them for your team

The positioning of target dummies is all dependent on your team and the teams you are fighting. Generally you want to use them to protect and deflect your back line. That means you generally want to place them on the front line of your board. This forces the enemy to waste time fighting them and not your units.

However, there are special cases that require special formations. For example, when facing Assassins, you should place your target dummies close to your Carry Units. Then even more units can act as a safety buffer between, for example, your Corki and an enemy Pyke. In this case, target dummies can be invaluable in helping a Cannoneer team survive. Meanwhile, if your enemy likes to use homing units like Thresh or Blitzcrank, placing your target dummies in the farthest corners can protect your carrier unit. A destroyed target dummy is much less bad than a deleted Ryze or Aurelion Sol.

Basically, it boils down to this: What does your team need? In a tank-packed team, target dummies may only be useful when placed in the back line to fend off assassins. However, on a really muddy team, they could be the frontline boost you need to survive earlier rounds. Whether you’re protecting dragons or mages, placing target dummies in a clever, defensive way should work well for you.
