The world and gameplay of Stray
Despite all the shiny surfaces and neon-lit alleyways, Stray is set in a forgotten city. This explains the citizens, which are mostly robots with creepy CRTs for heads showing their facial expressions. The stray cat that players control must find a way to escape the city by uncovering the history behind their civilization. As a regular cat with no powers, this is made possible with the introduction of a B-12, a drone that befriends the cat.
Stray’s gameplay features a mix of simple platforming, puzzle solving, and item collecting. Unlike most platformers, there is no dedicated jump button. Jumps are contextual, which means they’re all automated too. Its story includes linear levels made up entirely of platforms, in addition to more open areas. These larger rooms allow players to take on side quests and even talk to citizens for a deeper understanding of the environment.
True to a game about cats, Stray also allows superfluous cat-like actions. For example, there is a dedicated meow button. You can also take a nap at certain points and pan out the camera to show more of the area. Various physics objects can also be knocked off ledges just because cats do.
