What will the first Yankees offer look like

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the New York Yankees are preparing their first contract offer for star quarterback Aaron Judge, whom they hope to sign an extension.

The Yankees and Judge have been linked with an extension for quite some time now, but the question has always been how much money this front office will be willing to offer him.

Judge is a great player when healthy, don’t get me wrong. However, the only thing stopping the soon-to-be 30-year-old from getting the money he wants is the factor itself.

While he played in 148 games last season, Judge was only active in 112, 102 and 28 games in the previous three years. There was a reason the Yankees were concerned.

Aaron Judge contract: What will the Yankees offer?

Judges will turn 30 shortly after Opening Day, which suggests the length of any such contract may be the issue, not the AAV.

Heyman thinks the Yankees will take Judge’s offer, which would make him the fifth highest-paid quarterback in baseball, behind only Mike Trout, Mookie Betts, Bryce Harper and teammate Giancarlo Stanton. There’s a pretty wide gap between Stanton, who’s fourth on that list with $325 million, and Christian Yelich, who’s fifth with $215 million. That $110 million gap, as well as the years involved, is what will ultimately be negotiated between the two sides.

Judge certainly wants the final numbers on said contract to be close to Stanton, who he believes he is pretty much equivalent to. The Yankees, meanwhile, can protect their bets with a contract closer to Yelich’s.

Either way, the Yankees aren’t struggling for money. According to Forbes, they became the first baseball team to be valued at over $6 billion this year alone. They can buy Judge, Stanton and more.

But baseball is a business, and the owners are notoriously frugal. This may take a while.
