Get ready to return to Arrakis! dune Fans can be happy because the sequel is already in the works.
dune was originally released in October 2021 and was a hit not only with fans but also with critics. The Oscar-nominated film with Timothy Chalamet and zendaya was a box office hit, grossing more than $400 million worldwide. The film’s instant success led to confirmation of the sequel shortly thereafter.
Denis Villeneuve will return to direct the second film. In March 2022, he announced that the script was “largely” finished.
“But it’s always a work in progress,” said Villeneuve in an interview with Collider at the time. “It’s still a work in progress until final editing, but I’d say it’s solid. I have a script in my hands. We are currently preparing. My crew, we are in full preparation for the film.”
Dune, based on Frank Herbert’s long-running sci-fi novel of the same name, should always be split into two films, according to Villeneuve. Chalamet, 26, plays the film’s hero Paul Atreides, while Zendaya, 25, plays Chani, his future love interest. The cast is rounded off by Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgard, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin and Stephen McKinley Henderson.
Zendaya’s role in the first part of the franchise was minimal, leaving viewers asking for more. Fortunately, the wishes of dune Fandom seems to be coming true!
“For Zendaya, I would say Part One was a promise. I know we caught a glimpse of her in part one, but she will have a prominent role in part two,” said Villeneuve diversity in an interview in March 2022. “We will accompany Timothée and Zendaya on their adventures in the desert. That’s what drew me most to coming back to Arrakis, and that’s being able to spend time with these characters again.”
Zendaya also hinted at her storyline development with Deadline in November 2021. “Anyone who’s read the books knows there’s so much more to discover and do,” she said at the time.
In the same interview, Chalamet expressed his excitement about getting back on set. “We were ready to do it then [when we wrapped Part One]. This story is far from finished,” he teased.
Though most will return, 43-year-old Isaac will not be one of them following his character’s death. However, two new characters are introduced – Princess Irulan and Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. Florence Pugh and Austin Butler are in talks to play these potential roles, but nothing has been officially confirmed.
While dune: part One had a theatrical and HBO Max release on the same day, Part 2 will have a theatrical release exclusively. However, it has yet to be confirmed when it will arrive on streaming platforms.
