Rob Manfred announced the cancellation of the games and discussed negotiations after owners and players failed to reach an agreement on locking down the MLB.
Rob Manfred didn’t make any new friends on Tuesday when he faced the press and announced the results of the latest round of negotiations between players and owners over the MLB lockdown.
Gist: No new deal has been agreed. The locking process will continue. And the game will be officially canceled.
Here’s what Manfred had to say in his opening statement…
Rob Manfred Press Conference: What MLB Commissioner Says During Lockdown
“I was hoping to the contrary hoping that I would not have to hold this particular press conference in which I would cancel some of the regular games of the season. We have worked hard to avoid a bad outcome for our fans, bad for our players and bad for our club. I want to assure the fans that our failure to reach an agreement was not due to either side’s lack of effort. The players came here for nine days, they worked hard, they tried to make a deal and I appreciate their effort. Our club’s committee was committed to the process, they made compromises and accepted it through deadlines to ensure that we were exhausted before the game was cancelled. So far the parties have failed to reach a common goal of reaching an agreement. What is regrettable, possibly most unfortunate, is that the agreement we have put in place for our players is of great benefit to our fans and to our players. ”
What else did Manfred say? His comments are intended to sell fans about the owner’s recommendation to the player. He also raised questions about the delay in the negotiations.
During the press conference, Manfred was criticized for laughing and joking as he continued to cancel the game, what he previously called “a disastrous result”.
