They were only a few steps away from confronting them.

Since Duke did it through Texas Tech on Thursday night, they’ll be one game ahead of Tar Heels. All they have to do is beat Arkansas #4 on Saturday in the Elite Eight.

Sure, it’s not a given, but it’s one of the easier steps in this case.

UNC has a tougher job.

First, Tar Heels had to beat UCLA number 4 in Friday’s 16 Sweet. Bruins will not come down easily and that is only step one.

UNC will then have to play the winner of the sixth game between 3 Purdue and 15 Saint Peter’s. It will require another great sadness or the end of everyone’s favorite underdog story in 2022.

A Finals berth for both Duke and UNC will result in a Four Finals match between two of the biggest opponents in the game.

If the regular mid-season game in Coach K’s final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium was dramatic, you can imagine the NCAA Tournament meeting with a slot in the “theme” game. how will it be?

Incredibly, the two never met in March Madness. For what it was, UNC won their only 1971 NIT match.

It’s about time they added a post-season element to the competition.
