What Mike Tomlin expects from Kenny Pickett
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin expects one big thing from Kenny Pickett when the rookie quarterback settles down at training camp: playmaking.
Above all in 2022 the Steeler need to figure out their quarterback situation for this season, whether it’s Mitchell Trubisky, Mason Rudolph, or first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett.
While training camp for Trubisky and Rudolph should focus on winning the starting job, for Pickett it’s about proving he can adapt quickly to the pro game. The sooner he can do that, the sooner he can justify the faith Pittsburgh has placed in him by calling him the No. 20 overall pick.
Head coach Mike Tomlin specifically revealed what he wants to see from his rookie quarterback after day 6 of training camp.
Steelers: What Mike Tomlin expects from Kenny Pickett
“Playmaking,” Tomlin said of Steelers.com. “You know he’s not a 7B [second pick of the 7th round], You know what I mean. We expect quality play and a quick maturation process, and we like the things he’s done so far.”
Pickett may not need to start immediately with Trubisky and Rudolph available to directly replace Ben Roethlisberger for now. However, he was drafted at the QB position as a long-term answer for the franchise. Expect him to play sooner rather than later.
As Tomlin said, he doesn’t have the luxury of competing as an unannounced late-round pick. He has expectations that he must live up to.
He struggled in the camp’s opening week, but has been starting since August According to observers, he has started to recover. He even took on representatives of the second team. That should encourage Tomlin and his fans.
