One of the surprising new titles unveiled at the 2021 Game Awards was Rumbleverse, a wrestling battle royale. Developed by Iron Galaxy and published by Epic Games, Rumbleverse features much of the bright neon over-the-top weirdness the latter is known for. It’s also a free-to-play title available on all modern platforms except the Switch, so the only question left is when exactly is the Rumbleverse release date?

Epic Games has officially announced the game’s launch date as August 11th via a streamer montage trailer (Warning: lower your volume before clicking the link.) The game will be available on PC and both current and future Be available on last generation PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Players who play on different platforms than their friends should be pleased to know that Rumbleverse will also support full crossplay and cross-progression across platforms at launch.

The release date announcement, shrill as it is, should come as a huge relief to everyone looking forward to Rumbleverse. Prior to the announcement, the only news we had received about the wrestling battle royale was that it had been postponed indefinitely. It’s nice to hear it’s actually coming out – and pretty soon.

What is Rumbleverse?

Rumbleverse is a 40-player “brawler royale” in which players embody various wacky wrestlers using different skills and movesets and let off steam in a sprawling city. Influencers who have already had the opportunity to try Rumbleverse describe it as crazy, fun, yet competitive enough to get you interested in things like Map positioning and combo moves. It has also been described as similar to Fall Guys, albeit more in tone and aesthetics than gameplay.

Rumbleverse comes at a time when many developers seem to be pushing for a new and faster take on the battle royale genre. Other titles exemplifying this transition include Let It Die’s spin-off Deathverse and the recently rebranded Hype Squad. These games all center on smaller and often urban arenas, a focus on third-person close-quarters combat, and an over-the-top cartoon aesthetic that intentionally puts them at odds with military-style battle royales like Call of Duty: Warzone and PUBG.
