What is the potential selling price of Penguins? What is the state of the RSN landscape? – The Athletic

How do you figure out the proper sales price of an NHL team?

That is the question that most owners of Pittsburgh Penguins, Ron Burkle and Mario Lemieux, tried to figure out in negotiations with Fenway Sports Group.

To better understand what goes into this process, The Athletic spoke with people with firsthand knowledge of the two most recent non-expanded NHL franchise sales, Arizona Coyotes and Hurricane Carolina. These are deals in which there is a sale from owner to owner instead of dealing directly with the league, as in the case of the expansion Seattle Kraken and Vegas Golden Knights.

A source said: ‘The final number that comes out will be interesting as there is no exact formula or science for this. “Buying and selling a team is more like selling unique works of art than anything else, it’s not like buying a house.”

Scarcity is the key word when it comes to sports franchises. While there are currently 32 NHL teams, they are rarely put up for sale, so when it’s possible to sell, like the Pittsburgh deal, the team is the only thing available on the market.

“So both sides are making predictions about what they think this could mean and where valuation and revenue will go,” the source said.
