What if the 49ers kept Jimmy Garoppolo for one more season?

Chances are Jimmy Garoppolo will stay at the San Francisco 49ers for another season.
With the San Francisco 49ers having no intention of cutting starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, he will most likely work out the rest of his deal with the NFC West franchise.
Garoppolo is in the final year of his contract with the 49ers. While he will only hit the $1.4 million cap if he is released or traded, the 49ers general manager John Lynch at this point is not interested in cutting the bait with Garoppolo. There is not some compensation. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan says there is a “scenario” where Garoppolo spends the next year on the team.
San Francisco traded to #3 last spring to pull Trey Lance out of North Dakota. What would this potential scenario look like if Garoppolo continued to play in his final season with the 49ers in 2022?

If San Francisco keeps Garoppolo for next season, it means he will be the starting quarterback for the 49ers once again. Lance will act as a backup to him until Garoppolo is traded mid-season, injured or usurped by him on the depth rankings. San Francisco could win the league next year and make it to the knockout stages with Garoppolo. There are also some advantages to this move.
Because former 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel now runs the Miami Dolphins, it could make things more difficult for Lance to get past Garoppolo instantly on the depth chart. This is still Shanahan’s team, but there’s no denying what McDaniel brings to the game on the field and his overall attacking creativity. Either way, Garoppolo is more seasoned in Shanahan’s fouls.
While there’s a chance Garoppolo is traded before the 2022 NFL Draft, odds are he could actually be dealt with in training camp. Unfortunately, several starting midfielders will suffer major injuries in pre-season and a desperate time requires desperate measures. Garoppolo’s commercial value would skyrocket in that case, as the 49ers will be able to recoup some precious draft capital for 2023.
There are worse things than Garoppolo playing out the rest of his contract with the 49ers.
