What Christian Vazquez’s trade means to Willson Contreras

Christian Vazquez is I’m going to the Houston Astros from the Boston Red Sox. Who won the deal is a debate. Who lost it is pretty obvious. It’s the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs have the best catcher commercially available and yet no one was ready to bite. The Cubs were already in need of a catcher to trade. Because it’s such a unique position and the need isn’t all that great across the sport, they may need to lower the price.

The Astros were one of the most logical places for Contreras to land. Now with one goal down, the Cubs may have to hand over contreras to whoever offers them the best, but not exactly overwhelming, offer.

It remains a really big trade target for Contreras. The New York Mets, who have received very little offensively from their catcher duo James McCann and Tomas Nido this season, remain in the game. They also have an opening at the DH spot where Contreras could potentially get a lot of bats as well.

The Mets have been interested in striking a deal with the Cubs for Contreras, but nothing is yet to be finalized. That The asking price is the reported heist. Unfortunately, Chicago needs the Mets a lot more than New York needs Contreras.

Because the Mets have two defensively gifted catchers, they can always focus their attention elsewhere. With less than 24 hours to reach an agreement, they don’t necessarily have to give in to Chicago’s demands.

The Cubbies have already lost the San Francisco Giants as a potential target for Contreras when they decided to fade into the summer months. There really weren’t too many other places he could end up in, although he would be a great upgrade for many teams.

The Vazquez trade closes a door for the Cubs to trade Contreras. The already easy bidding war will need a mysterious team to jump into the running. Otherwise, the Cubs will have to decide if they can live with dropping the price on their All-Star catcher and sending him to the Mets.
