What are the NFL’s overtime rules in the knockouts?

While regular-season injury time may end in a draw, things are a little different in the NFL knockouts. It doesn’t make sense to have a tie here.

The NFLOvertime rules are often the subject of a discussion, and while regular season overtime rules may allow for a tie, the outcome is not (and should not be) may happen after the season. To put it bluntly, the NFL doesn’t allow that in the knockouts.

So what does the NFL do to overtime in post-season?

NFL playoffs injury time rules

According to NFL Football Operations websitehere are the overtime rules for the knockout round:

Assuming the score is still tied at the end of overtime, the second overtime will begin. The same is true if the second team’s first possession has not ended at the end of extra time.

The teams then move on and continue to play, continuing in stoppage time until one team wins. This can go on for any number of overtime periods. However, more is needed until one team beats the other.

What if there is a tie in the NFL Qualifiers?

However, if there is still no winner at the end of the fourth overtime, another coin toss will take place and the teams will play until one team wins.

There will be a short break between each extra time, but the teams will not get a break after the second half.

Both teams will have three timeouts for an inning.

The team that loses the first coin toss in overtime will be selected to own the ball. If they don’t want possession of the ball, they can also choose which team to defend. They may also choose to delay that choice.

Monday and Wednesday overtime follow the same time rule that applies to Monday and Wednesday specified time.
