After India’s defeat by South Africa, West Indies got a chance to play in the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup. India lost their last group match against South Africa at Hagley Oval Stadium in Christchurch.

West Indies, who were beaten by South Africa in the last group match, looked to India’s defeat. They relied heavily on the result between the India game and the England vs Bangladesh game. But especially India’s defeat meant a lot for them as it would mean fourth place in the points table. England beat Bangladesh by 100 runs. Four teams have now qualified: Australia, England, West Indies and South Africa.

The match between the Proteas and the ‘Women in Blue’ was an exciting one. India scored 274 runs by losing 7 wickets. The pressure on both teams was until the end. In the last over, South Africa needed just 7 runs to win. Deepti Sharma, the veteran spinner, was commissioned by team captain Mithali Raj to bowl in the final.

Deepti was successful from the first ball to give the batters no chance to hit big runs. But the 5th ball of the over changed everything. A dangerous looking ball from Mignon du Preez was caught by Harmanpreet Kaur, who was very successful with bat, ball and fielding.

Du Preez was walking back into the locker room when the field umpire stopped them and called that delivery a no-ball. As India began to enjoy Du Preez’s wicket, it was ended soon after the no-ball. Deepti Sharma passed the crease. When South Africa needed just 1 run in 1 ball, all members of India stood in the inner circle to prevent du Preez from scoring a single goal. But du Preez then hit a four and broke the hearts of the Indian team and Indian fans.
