Weld County Sheriff’s Office searches for 2 fraud suspects who stole $27,000 from store – Greeley Tribune

The Weld County Sheriff’s Office is searching for two men suspected of defrauding a local business out of nearly $30,000 in steel.

Deputies were responding to a cold theft report at a steel company in unincorporated Weld County north of Greeley around 4 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. The business owner said more than $27,000 worth of steel was scammed.

The owner reported that a man he knew as George Smith of George’s Construction had made four significant purchases over the phone using a credit card in the past few weeks. The footage was picked up by another man named Carlos Martinez.

The purchases were later flagged as fraudulent by the credit card company and the company canceled the payments, the press release said.

The suspects use false names and use an app to hide their cell phone numbers. However, the company took security footage of Martinez and the vehicle he used to pick up the rebar.

He is described as a white or Hispanic male of average height and build. He was last seen in a white shirt, blue jeans and a light blue baseball cap.
