3-time tennis Grand Slam champion Ash Barty stunned the world when she announced her retirement from tennis at the age of 25, just weeks after her win Australian Open 2022 where she ended Australia’s 44-year wait for a domestic singles champion at Melbourne Park.
With 3 Majors on 3 different surfaces, a total of 119 weeks as world no. Barty tearfully bids farewell to the sport she played professionally for more than 11 years and has yet to announce if she will try her luck in other sports.
After playing in the women’s Big Bash League in 2015, the year of her hiatus from tennis and being a golf enthusiast along with her fiancé Garry Kissick, a pro golfer, there has been much speculation about her switch to a new sport. In the midst of this world champion captain of the Australian women’s team Meg Lanning spoke about whether the team would welcome Barty if she actually switched sports.
“I was surprised. I think we all were. You don’t expect someone who runs so well and dominates to call the time. It’s a very brave call. If she wants to come along and play cricket again [we] would definitely be interested in talking to her. She was pretty good at that [it] Last time she played. She seems to be very talented in most things that she does. Lets see what happens,” said Lanning, as reported by the Guardian.

Fresh from her 2nd world title with the national team, Elly Perry, who is also considered one of the modern greats of the game for her fantastic and consistent performances, also spoke about Barty’s return to cricket. Perry had also represented the national soccer team at the FIFA World Cup 2011 before finally deciding to switch to cricket.
“There is a general expectation that you will play for a longer period of time and you will play as long as possible. That’s the norm. She really tends to go against the norm a bit and do what’s best for her, which is just really cool. It sounds like golf has a better chance [than cricket]. It would be really nice for her to be able to do what she wants to do.
“There is speculation about what sport she will play next or what she will do. Hopefully she just finds that out for herself and does exactly what she planned to do.” Perry said, according to the Guardian. While Barty continues to keep her plans a secret, she was spotted at one recently Amateur Golf Tournament where she emerged as champion.
