how, after Daniil Medvedevs defeat at Indian Wells 2022, Novak Djokovic will start his journey as new World #1 am Montag, former American tennis player and tennis coach Paul Annacone commented on this topic.
In conversation with tennis channelexplained the former world No. 12, “Novak seems to have been on this #1 ranking for the past 30 consecutive years. [We are going to see] the old see-saw battle between him and Medvedev”.
The tennis expert went on to highlight Medvedev’s nervousness and unease. It should be noted that the Russian has a dismal record at Indian Wells having played here five times and made it to the round of 16 only once. In addition, Annacone praised Monfils for beating the Russian despite the Frenchman being a set behind. “I think he wasn’t comfortable playing here at Indian Wells, it’s tough conditions here for people who hit the ball really flat. Obviously Medvedev was unsettled here and Gael took care of him.” said Paul Annacone.
“I think he goes back there and feels comfortable there” – Paul Annacone
Daniil Medvedev successfully deposed Novak Djokovic from the No. 1 ranking last month, but after the BNP Paribas Open, Medvedev will return it to the Serb. When the 26-year-old lost to Gael Monfils 6-4, 3-6, 1-6 in the third round, it seemed a foregone conclusion. Of course, it will only become official when the new ATP rankings are published next Monday. Medvedev’s reign in the ATP rankings will span a period of time a total of three weeks. The honor is then returned to Djokovic, the previous holder.
However, the American coach, who has mentored big names like 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer, 14-time Grand Slam winner Pete Sampras and 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens, believes firmly that the Russian will make it “Make yourself comfortable” at the no. 1 position. “You can never take that from Medvedev, I think he will return there and feel comfortable there [in the future].”
Additionally, with the 2022 Miami Open lurking in the shadow of the 2022 Indian Wells, the US Open champion has a good chance of returning to the top.
The former world No. 1 is back in business
Last month, Medvedev broke Djokovic’s long tenure as world no. After Djokovic’s defeat in Dubai last month Medvedev was able to claim No. 1 for the first time in his career, but the Russian struggled to live up to expectations in his debut tournament as world No. 1.
Despite being absent from the Indian Wells Masters event due to his stance on Covid vaccinations, Djokovic is set to return to the top of the ATP rankings on Monday amid much controversy and conjecture. He will also forego the Miami Open later this month.
