Alfa Romeo has had a positive start to the campaign. Former Mercedes driver and Vice World Champion 2019 Valtteri Bottas finished P8 and brought home a handful of points. While teammate Guanyuzhou managed a P11 finish.

The Italian team made it deep into Bahrain Q3 and the Saudi Arabian GP but just missed ahead of the Australian Grand Prix. Zhou and Bottas qualified for the race in 14th and 12th. Bottas, who holds the Formula 1 record for most consecutive Q3 qualifications, broke his streak after 103 races.

While his team makes improvements, Alfa Romeo is team boss Fred Vaseur claims they messed up their strategy which cost them a top 10 starting position. But he is positive about the team’s performance and hopes the team can continue it.

“We screwed up Q2,” Alfa Romeo boss Fred Vasseur said of the poor performance in Australian GP Qualifying 2

Valterri Bottas set for the Australian GP despite missing Q3. The Finn battled Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin. The Canadian was penalized for swaying on the straight, pushing Bottas wide at Turn 3. The Finn finished P8 after passing Pierre Gasly on the final laps. Alfa Romeo team boss Fred Vaseur was satisfied with the overall performance of his teams.

Vaseur said “It was a step backwards in qualifying, I think we messed up Q2. But Q1 was very good. We were P6. The race pace was great. The problem is that we lost too much track time mainly behind Stroll. But overall I am very happy with the pace.”

He added, “I’m very happy with Zhou’s pace, also because he rode very well. I think it’s a good weekend for us, in the same vein as the first two. We probably just need to be a little more efficient in Q2, then we’ll start from a better position and that will change our weekend. Overall I think we had a good weekend.”

Alfa Romeo is 6th in the Constructors’ Championship. And Vasseur is keen to maintain his form for the rest of the season in order to get a better placement in midfield.
