World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman said Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will face the winner in the upcoming rematch between WBC cruiser champion Ilunga Makabu and mandatory opponent Thabiso Mchunu.
At the WBC convention last month in Mexico, Canelo made a formal request – which the sanctioning body approved – to fight for the WBC cruiser class.
Currently, Canelo is the undisputed world champion in the super middleweight, 168-pound limit class.
Canelo’s leap will be huge, as the cruiser weight limit is 200 pounds.
Mexican boxer who has won world titles in the 154, 160, 168 and 175 weight classes.
It is believed that Canelo will face Makabu for the cruiser belt at Cinco De Mayo over the weekend in May.
But, Mchunu isn’t going to skip his required shot – so he’s going up against Makabu on January 29 at the Packard Music Hall in Warren, Ohio.
Advertiser Don King, who will be hosting the Makabu-Mchunu event, expects Canelo to be the one ready for battle.
Sulaiman likes the idea of a rematch, as it would build both fighters’ names for a potential clash with Canelo in the United States.
“The winner of the match Makabu vs. Mchunu will face Canelo. There are many wars that have been and are going on and that is one of them. It is important to make Makabu and Mchunu known, known to the international boxing community at these levels. They are known in Africa and Russia, but we must see them on a card and thus heat up a war [with Canelo]”, said Sulaiman.
“WBC will always support Canelo, he is our Franchise Champion which allows him to look for any kind of challenge and doesn’t get in the way of him being a virtue with guidance.” that determination. [As Franchise Champion] he has an open path to finding alternative paths and we will support him unconditionally. “
