Watch: Wild moment a US Air Force pilot ejects after a dodgy attempt to land

A US Air Force pilot disembarked from a Lockheed Martin fighter jet Thursday morning in a failed landing at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth.

“We are aware of the crash of the F-35B on the joint runway at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth and understand that the pilot successfully ejected,” Lockheed Martin said in a statement.

“Safety is our priority and we will follow the appropriate investigation protocol.”

Video obtained by NBC 5 showed the plane landing vertically as it bounced off the runway.

As it came back down, the tail pitched up, driving the nose into the ground and snapping off the front landing gear.

The plane then slid 180 degrees on its nose and right wing before turning 45 degrees the other way.

With the plane on the ground, the pilot was thrown from the plane and the plane appeared to move forward a few meters before coming to rest in the grass.

Pilot’s condition unknown

Lockheed Martin assembles the F-35B Lightning II fighter jet at a facility that shares north-south runway 18/36 with the joint reserve base.

Lockheed confirmed the crash and the pilot’s egress, but offered no further information on the pilot’s condition.

A Pentagon spokesman said the plane was being flown by a US government pilot at the time of the crash, although it had not yet been handed over to the military by manufacturer Lockheed Martin.

White Settlement Police Chief Christopher Cook said they were called at 10:15 a.m. local time by US Navy Police and Lockheed Martin to keep onlookers away from a road that runs alongside an airstrip where officers were responding to an incident involving an airplane and examined him.

“You never want to get that call that a plane crashed,” Cook said.

“We have a very privileged place in our community for the military. White Settlement is a military community.”
