Watch The Moment David Ortiz Found Out He Was Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame – CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) – David Ortiz received a very important phone call Tuesday night informing him that he is now a Baseball Hall of Famer. Big Papi was delighted to receive that call.

Ortiz was in the Dominican Republic surrounded by family and friends – including former Boston teammate and Hall of Famer teammate Pedro Martinez – when he received word from BBWAA’s Jack O’Connell.

“I am calling you from Cooperstown, New York to let you know that baseball writers have elected you to the National Baseball Hall of Fame,” O’Connell told Ortiz.

Then, Ortiz flung his arm into the air and let out an emphatic “YES!” before hugging Dad and Martinez’s big bear. The Red Sox shared that moment with the world on Twitter shortly after Ortiz received the news:

It was just pure joy on everyone’s faces. (And what a sweet shirt on Big Papi!)

Ortiz became the 58th player shortlisted on the first try and only the fifth Red Sox player to become the first to be voted into the Hall of Famer, joining Martinez, Wade Boggs, Carl Yastrzemski and Ted Williams. Ortiz is only the fourth Dominican native to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

“For a boy from Santo Domingo, I always dreamed of playing professional baseball. Thanks to the encouragement of my father, Leo, and my mother, Angela Rosa, I knew from my earliest days at Estudia Espaillat High School in the Dominican Republic that I had the opportunity to pursue my dream of competing in the world major tournament,” Ortiz said in a statement shortly after Tuesday’s announcement. “And although my path to success was not easy, it was my friend, Hall of Famer, Pedro Martinez, who convinced the Red Sox to give me the opportunity to achieve success. And while my journey to Boston took 10 years, 14 years in the Red Sox uniform was the best time of my life. We broke the curse and then had two more championships before I retired in 2016 — it was a sweet and beautiful journey.

“I am so grateful to my family and children for being with me tonight in this special recognition,” added Ortiz. “And I know my mom is giving me kisses from heaven like I always give her a kiss every time I run home.” Watch The Moment David Ortiz Found Out He Was Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame – CBS Boston
